Our Story
Born From A Classroom Frustration
Science Guru began in 2018 when a female scientist noticed the same pattern again and again: bright, capable students falling behind not because they could not learn, but because a crowded classroom moved on before they were ready.
Each student has a different brain and capacity for learning and comprehension, but the schooling system treats every student like they are all the same. Personalised attention is beneficial for students as all lessons are structured based on the student's needs and immediate feedback is given. Having tutored for private companies and higher education institutions throughout my university years in pursuit of a PhD in Science, I noticed that students who are privately tutored not only improve faster but also gain confidence academically. I identified an affordability gap for parents in middle-to-low-income households, which deprives students of an opportunity to gain an understanding in maths and science and performance to their full potential.
So I built something different — an "academic acceleration vehicle" for learning. We focus on small-group and one-on-one tutoring where lessons start at the student's actual level, move at their pace and celebrate progress loudly. Today our tutors support more than 50 families across South Africa, online and in person.
